Phurba (Skt. Keel, Kilakam, kilkaja) in East Asia is a short, hand weapon made from steel, bronze, meteorites. Vajrakilaya is known in Tibet as Dorje Phurba or Diamond Dagger and symbolizes overcoming all obstacles on the path of enlightenment, the indestructible, immutable nature of diamonds and destructing the ego. Three angry faces on the top mean yidams – Vairochana, Hayagriva and Yamantaka that are related to the field of power of phurba. Blue face on the right side destroys anger, red on the left – lust and white in the middle – ignorance. Twelve skulls, forming a crown around the heads, mean freedom from twelve links of interdependent origination. Triple blade symbolizes roots of three poisons (ignorance, desire, hatred). Makar head (mythical water creature with the head of a tapir, crocodile or dragon) in the upper part of the blade symbolizes the inseparability of action and wisdom. Triple blade also means control over the three times (Past, Present and Future) and three worlds (above, on and below the earth surface).
